Post #7: Interesting People: Zach Condon

23 05 2009

Some people take unusual paths to success.

You might say that Zach Condon is one of these people.

Zach is the lead singer and composer for the popular band, Beirut.

However, Zach’s story is a bit unique.

Throughout Zach’s school life, he was always a good student.

He got A’s in almost all his classes.

However, when he was a sophomore in high school, Zach became dissatisfied with school, and dropped out.

Instead of finishing high school, he traveled to Paris with his brother.

While in Paris, Zach learned to speak French, and he also fell in love with European music.

You see, music was always Zach’s first love.

Some people say he is a kind of musical genius.

Whenever he had free time, he would go to his room and practice writing or playing all different kinds of music.

Unfortunately for Zach, he hurt his arm when he was a teenager, and now he is physically unable to play the guitar.

Instead, Zach taught himself to play the ukelele, the accordion, the french horn, the trumpet, and several other instruments.

Post #6: Stuff Andrew Likes: Traveling (Part 2)

30 04 2009

There are generally two main kinds of travel.

The first is called a package tour, and the goal of this type of trip is to see the most important places and not waste time wandering around.

People who join these kinds of trips usually travel in a group, often with other people that they don’t know well.

The other kind of travel is often called a ‘backpack trip’.

The goal of this kind of trip is to explore, find places that aren’t in tour books, and interact with the local people.

Backpack trips are the kind I usually prefer.

I like to get off the usual path and be a little adventurous.

Sometimes this can lead to problems, but I think that’s just part of the fun of traveling.

While backpack travel is very popular in America, package tours seem to be more popular in Korea.

I’m not sure why.

Of course, both kinds of traveling have their good and bad points, so if you’re going to travel, you have to decide which kind of trip is right for you.

Even if you don’t have any interest in traveling, I recommend that everyone try to spend some time in another country and culture, if you have the chance.

I’m sure you won’t regret it.

To finish up, here are two videos from an American man, named Matt, who quit his job and spent nearly two years of his life traveling around the world.

I hope I have the chance to take a trip like that someday.

Post #5: Stuff Andrew Likes: Traveling (Part 1)

30 04 2009

I love to travel.

There aren’t many things that I find as interesting as visiting somewhere new.

Something about the feeling of traveling to a strange new place is just so exciting.

Seeing different faces.

Hearing different languages.

Trying different foods.

Taking in all the different sights and sounds.

There’s really nothing else like it.

Even though I haven’t traveled all that much, I’m thankful for the chances I’ve had to see other parts of the world.

Actually, traveling is one of the reasons I first came to Korea.

When I first came, I had never been outside of North America.

Because of this, coming to Korea seemed like a wonderful opportunity to experience another place and culture.

Of course, I’m very thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to live here for almost 5 years.

I’ve been able to travel to many places in Korea, such as Busan, Seoraksan, Samcheok, Boryeong, Jirisan, Wando, Gwangju, Panmunjeom, and Geumgangsan.

Post #4: Interesting Movies: Where The Wild Things Are

14 04 2009

As many of you know, I love movies.

So, when I hear about an interesting new movie, I get very excited.

One movie that I’m really looking forward to these days is a movie called Where the Wild Things Are

One of the reasons that I’m so excited about this movie is that when I was young, it was a very famous children’s book.

The book was written by a man named Maurice Sendak in 1963.

The story is about a boy named Max.

His mother gets angry at him and she sends him to his bedroom.

Max is really shy and he likes to wear an animal costume when he is playing in his house.
